With the industry changing in our state, there has been an increase in the need for plug and abandonment of orphaned wells. We've completed the plug and abandonment of over 2500 oil and gas wells for our customers and the State of Montana since 2006. We provide an "all in one" service and can complete every aspect of the plug and abandonment program to the satisfaction of the procedures outlined in the state's sundry, including the final reclamation of the orphaned oil or gas well. Plugging Montana's First Oil Well
In 2023, natural gases were detected to be leaking from the Butte Oil Well, drilled in 1901 and located within the wilderness of Glacier National Park. The area is seismically active; tremors and changing pressures within the bedrock often lead to gas escapes. Such conditions present a health and safety hazard. Plugging the well was considered essential to reduce methane leaks, prevent the migration of chemicals into the lake, minimize physical hazards, and ensure adherence to environmental regulations. In August of 2026, Liquid Gold Well Service Inc completed the plugging of the Butte Oil #1 well.
